Wattpad day 6: the culture of free

Well, it’s now been six days on Wattpad’s Featured and nothing of significance to report. Reads have gone up another 800 (11%), the number of unique readers has gone down by 70 (but only for the day?), yet engagement has remained constant. I have also gained new readers in two new countries, Afghanistan and China, bringing that total to 71. I have not lost any countries despite the decrease in the number of unique readers; this suggests to me that my suspicion that the countries data represents total number of reads, not readers, is correct.

So, some people finished the book, some may have abandoned it, and new readers arrived. None of which is surprising.

What has changed is that I am now being messaged privately by young authors asking me to read their work and provide feedback.

I’m all for providing feedback, and yesterday I remarked about the lack of it on the site, but I also think feedback should be unsolicited. This is something that professionals on the site will soon have to contend with: when I first subscribed to Wattpad and offered to answer questions on the forums about grammar, etc., I was soon asked to provide free editing services for entire books, and am now receiving requests for free storyediting. It makes me feel awkward because on the one hand I want to engage positively with people on the site, on the other hand I have client work (and bills to pay), a novel to write, and this blog.

Welcome to Wattpad — where everything is free except the advertising.
