Print & eBook Self-Publishing: The Business Side

Self-publishing is not just a creative choice, it is also a business decision, yet many indie authors rush into self-publishing without recognizing this fact. In this course you will learn what is expected of a Canadian ‘indie’ author with regards to: editing and design costs; the ISBN system and how to open a Library and Archives Canada account; copyright, trademark, and libel laws; digital rights management; distribution and royalties; and income tax on foreign earnings. Time permitting, this course wraps up with a discussion on marketing strategies. Michelle Demers is the self-published author of the nonfiction book The Global Indie Author, now in its second edition.

Print & eBook Self-Publishing: The Technical Side

Many authors fear they have to learn complex technical skills in order to produce their own books, but this is not the case! You can produce a basic digital or print book using familiar tools such as MS Word. You will learn the principles of manuscript formatting for ebooks and print, cover and interior image requirements, converting your manuscript to Kindle and the ePub format using free software, and how to test your ebooks before publishing. Takeaway handouts will be provided. Those of you who wish to try out the techniques during instruction may bring your laptop to class. Michelle Demers is the indie author of the novel Baby Jane.
