Wattpad day 7: is a new energy developing?

It’s the end of my first week on Featured. In theory I should now be relegated to Featured’s back list, but the cutoff is not set in stone, and Baby Jane is still displaying in the top twenty (fourth at this moment, actually). When Wattpad will take me out of the top twenty is not certain.

There seems to be a new energy developing.

I’m up to 9100 reads (then 9200 in just the hour it took me to collate my data and write this), and my number of unique readers has risen again, to 215. This lends credence to my theory that the number of unique readers is over the 24-hour period; it is not an aggregate number. Unfortunately there is no way to determine the aggregate number. The only way to get any idea of how many unique readers you may have is to divide the total number of reads by the number of parts in your book. Baby Jane has 49 parts — 47 if you discount the separate copyright and acknowledgements parts at the end — so if everyone who has started it has finished it that amounts to around 194 readers. Since I have recorded a daily high of 255 readers, the figure of 194 only tells me that not everyone who started the book finished it, or has finished it yet. Nothing new there.

I’m up to 318 votes, or 3.49% of reads against an average of 2.41%.

A few days ago I started counting again how many users have added Baby Jane to their reading list; each day would see only five or so add it, yet so far today seventeen users have added Baby Jane. If the theory holds — that happy readers tell two friends who tell two friends — this might actually start to go somewhere. But will it happen before I’m dropped from the top twenty on Featured? Is one week enough time for a book to find its footing on such a mammoth site?

I’ve found some enthusiastic fans,

judging by this comment late yesterday on the book’s final part: “IT’S OVER. SO FAR, honestly the best book I’ve read on Wattpad. The balance in this book is what did it. The contrast of the heavy content and emotional confessions with love and family. The way you seamlessly blended the spirit world and the physical world, was perfect. I give you ALL-STAR rating.”

Thank you CopperPhoenix! Please tell your friends.

I’ve gained readers in another five countries —

Morocco, Iran, Taiwan, Japan, and Switzerland — bringing the total to 76. Considering I started out with only a known handful of countries where I had sold Baby Jane, this is impressive. Will it translate into sales? Not yet. And worse, despite my new aggregator’s assertions that my book would be seen on their retailer sites within two weeks (for which I delayed Baby Jane‘s release date on Featured), neither Apple nor Google have the book yet for sale. Considering Google Play’s dominance in many of these countries I am now earning new readers in, this is a wasted opportunity.

Going forward I will only now blog weekly or perhaps bi-weekly about Baby Jane’s status on Wattpad unless there is something significant to report. Later I will summarize my thoughts on the site to date, after I finish some client work.
